There was no doubt about it—traveling via one of the bureau’s private jets was a nice way to go.

“It’s a small aircraft—not tiny, but small—and you can hit some bumps,” Hunter warned her.

“I don’t know, I like it! A coffee machine that brews anything your heart desires, a copilot who does double-duty making sure you have anything you could want...not bad. No wonder you’re so spoiled,” she teased Hunter.

He made a face back at her. “I rarely travel this way. It’s just that recent events are considered top priority. So we get some special treatment. Nice for me, too.”

Amy laughed. “The best thing is the plane can pretty much go when you want it to go! Doesn’t work that way on commercial airlines.” She grinned at him. “When I was a kid, one of the girls I went to school with was überrich. We were all together in New York for a theater event—”

“You were into theater? Thought you always wanted to be a cop?” he asked.

“I did, yes, but that didn’t mean I didn’t have other interests,” she said. “But you’re missing my story! She came to say goodbye to me when it was over. She was the nicest kid, really, but I’d be going on into high school, and she was leaving for a boarding school in France. We were hugging and crying and all, and I finally told her our plane was going to leave. She was truly baffled. She told me to have my parents tell the pilot he needed to wait. I tried to explain things like that just didn’t work in my world. Hunter, she’d never been on a commercial plane, just her parents’ private jet! Anyway, now I get how easily one could get into enjoying this!”

“Yes, the best thing is it can wait when you need it to—and pretty much go when you want it to, as well,” Hunter said.

“I know,” Amy said. “And it’ll be useful to get back quickly. We have a lot to pursue in Florida.”

“Obviously, this thing is going to reach across the country. We may learn something in New York we can’t learn in Florida. So...”

“I get it. John and Aidan and Ryan and a whole task force are all on it.”

Hunter had his tablet out and was studying it. “All right, first thing, we’re to meet with a Detective Gil Logan. He’s been working the case. Local FBI has been working with him, but they’ve left it in his hands. Other than the red horse element and the call you received, it is a local matter. But Garza and the powers that be have said we’re welcome to any information and assistance available should the cases prove to be related.”

“The answers lie in Florida. Maybe there’s a clue in New York, but I believe we’ll find the real answers in Florida.”

Amy leaned back in the big, plush seat. It could hold a team of six very comfortably, she thought.

“What is it? You’re almost smiling,” Hunter said.
